2021 Racial Equity Training

North Carolina Region,
Since August 2017, the Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation (ARPR) Commission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina has offered Racial Equity Training for Clergy and Church Leaders in fulfilling the requirement for racial equity training set forth in Resolution I passed at the 2016 Regional Assembly held in Greenville, NC.
Over the course of three years, our Racial Equity Training has been faithful and effective in garnering the attention of other states and regions across the nation including South Carolina and Texas. Our training model is a sixteen-hour in-person process over the course of two days. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the ARPR Commission was forced to cancel the Spring 2020 training as well as limit the platform capacity of our Fall 2020 training.
As the pandemic continues to dictate the necessity for limited travel, limited capacity, and health/safety protocols, the NC Commission, the Regional Minister, and our trainers also continue to engage in thoughtful dialogue, finding creative ways of fulfilling the Racial Equity Training requirements for NC clergy.
In a pre-pandemic world, we strived to offer a high-quality, interactive journey filled with biblical and historical content that offers clarity, sensitivity, and self-discovery as it relates to race. This model has been effective and impactful in which attendees have emerged armed with a common language, historical accuracy, better listening techniques, and the importance of sharing of our stories! In a pandemic society, the challenge consists of turning the current model into an online training model inclusive of a series of self-paced lessons through an e-learning platform and scheduled zoom sessions.
While the process and content of the training are the same as our in-person, two-day workshop, the format, delivery, and length will be different. Participants will have approximately two weeks to complete self-paced lessons. At the conclusion of two weeks, all lessons must be completed as participants enter a series of zoom sessions. Five scheduled zoom sessions will be two to three hours in length, including Thursday evening, Friday morning/afternoon, and Saturday morning/afternoon. Our goal is to refrain from an eight-hour-long zoom meeting while including as much interaction as possible through the best practices of online continuing education.
We believe that many clergies and church leaders will enjoy this online option while others prefer the in-person model. At this time, we are scheduling only one online training in order to be both flexible and purposeful as our society moves through the pandemic in 2021. We encourage all clergy who have not yet completed the required Racial Equity Training to register for the online training as soon as possible as participation is limited to forty (40) participants.
Grace & Peace to you,
Bishop Valerie Melvin, Regional Minister, NC
Rev. Dr. Jackie McHenry, Chair, ARPR Commission
Rev. Jason Williams, Vice-Chair, ARPR Commission…
2021 CCNC Report to General Board
Dear Disciples,
Each year, the College of Regional Ministers submit to the General Board of our denomination an annual report summarizing the activities within our regions in a given year. The 2020 reports were starkly different from the 2019 reports, which glowed with financial improvements, strong vision, and congregational growth. 2020 had a different description. Surreal! But, as we read each report, we did not feel despair. We felt the hope of each Regional Minister and their congregations.
Today, I wish to share with you the report for North Carolina (embedded below as well). I hope it encourages your heart to know how many times as a covenant of fellowship churches you made sweet lemonade from the sour moments of a surreal year. I am so proud of you, Christian Church in North Carolina, and I pray that you will remain hopeful for God’s abundant grace afforded to each one of you.
Peace.
Bishop Valerie J. Melvin,
Regional Minister

A Special Announcement from the Center for Faith and Giving
The Center for Faith and Giving is pleased to announce that our 2021 annual campaign resources are now available on our website. This year, these resources are unique in that we are creating them dynamically as the year progresses (so that they best reflect the moment we are in) and they are free. A simple link connects users to a registration using their email address (so that we can send them the materials as they update throughout the year) and to the current materials available. The site also has a forum so that users can ask questions, share their own ideas, and give us an on-going evaluation of the resources so we can adjust in real-time to the needs of congregations in your Region.
The landing page (https://centerforfaithandgiving.org/created-to-be-a-steward/) contains an introduction and FAQs and the link to register for the materials. I have included artwork for you to use in your promotion of these resources. We hope to make it easy this year – with no work for your region to do, save to point people in our direction with a ready-made link (and no invoices to pay!).
Contributors this year will include Linda Parker, Janet Long, Carol Devine, and Scott Hardin-Nieri – with some additional writers to be named later in the year. We are addressing stewardship as self-care, creation-care, resource management, and sharing the gospel. The materials necessary to run a financial campaign in these “Covid times” will be a part of the resource package.
Yes, we do have an investment in the creation and delivery of these resources, and should your region wish to make a gift to the Center for Faith and Giving, we will gladly receive it! Such gifts make it possible for this ministry to provide quality stewardship materials for the whole church as we seek to create a culture of generosity that can sustain all of our good work. Going forward, we hope to provide annual campaign materials free of charge every year.
With gratitude,
Bruce Barkhauer
Minister for Faith and Giving
