Afghan Refugee Response
Afghan Refugee Response
If you were unable to join our Disciples Refugee & Immigration Ministries (RIM) and Week of Compassion hosted webinar this week as they shared stories from representatives who have resettled Afghan SIVs and the urgent call for our support, the link is provided here, https://vimeo.com/605057976.
Week of Compassion provides congregational support grants to encourage and strengthen Disciples churches in welcoming Afghans to communities across the U.S., in partnership with their local resettlement agencies. This grant can be used for congregational ministries that help with food assistance, rent, or any other essentials. Grants range from $500-$2,000. Apply using this link, https://www.weekofcompassion.org/refugees-and-displaced-people.html.

Most of the most vulnerable “targets” are still in Afghanistan, and it will take delicate, complicated, and diligent legal representation to get them out under the new Taliban government. Here are the legal service providers doing the work, or organizing volunteer attorneys like my colleagues and me, to help those left behind to get out:
Pangea, which has been in Kabul since 2003
Afghan Legal Support & Resettlement Fund – Fundraiser for government filing fees and legal services by Pars Equality Center
Afghan Diaspora for Equality and Progress, which offers the opportunity to “sponsor” an individual for humanitarian parole into the United States (which has a governmental filing fee of $575 per application)
Human Rights First – where one can volunteer legal services (as an attorney), interpreter services (in Pashto and Dari), advocate on behalf of Afghan refugees, and donate to the work in general
In terms of Afghan refugee response for those who were evacuated, have been on a military base abroad, and will land here in the U.S. as refugees, here are the two national nonprofit groups that have the federal contract to do unaccompanied minor refugee resettlement:
Church World Service and their specific national Afghan site
Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Services (LIRS) and their national “how to help” page
Here in North Carolina, both organizations have local offices where they will be doing active refugee resettlement in and around:
Raleigh through Lutheran Services Carolinas and here is their specific “what you can do” page (with a menu of options from materials donations to “Amazon Smile” and wishlist options)
Durham through Church World Service (their site currently lands on the Afghan help page)
Greensboro through Church World Service (their site currently lands on the Afghan help page)
For adults and families, there are nine agencies nationwide; however, not all of these have offices in North Carolina (see the list below for NC affiliates and links):
Raleigh through Lutheran Services Carolinas and here is their specific “what you can do” page (with a menu of options from materials donations to “Amazon Smile” and wishlist options)
Durham through Church World Service (their site currently lands on the Afghan help page)
Greensboro through Church World Service (their site currently lands on the Afghan help page)
Winston Salem & High Point through World Relief Triad
Durham through World Relief Durham
Raleigh through U.S. Committee for Refugees & Immigrants
Additionally, here are some other organizations to consider for donations as well:
Miles4Migrants
Miles4Migrants uses donated frequent flyer miles, credit card points, and cash to help people impacted by war, persecution, or disaster reunite with loved ones and start new beginnings in safe homes.
Women for Women International
Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security
Afghan Coalition

2021 Fall Racial Equity Training
Register By Mail | Register Online | Download the Flyer
North Carolina Region,
Since August 2017, the Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation (ARPR) Commission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina has offered Racial Equity Training for Clergy and Church Leaders in fulfilling the requirement for racial equity training set forth in Resolution I passed at the 2016 Regional Assembly held in Greenville, NC.
Over the course of four years, our Racial Equity Training has been faithful and effective in garnering the attention of other states and regions across the nation including South Carolina and Texas. Our training model is a sixteen-hour in-person process over the course of two days. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the ARPR Commission was forced to cancel the Spring 2020 training as well as limit the platform capacity of our Fall 2020 training.
In a pre-pandemic world, we strived to offer a high-quality, interactive journey filled with biblical and historical content that offers clarity, sensitivity, and self-discovery as it relates to race. This model has been effective and impactful. Attendees have emerged armed with a common language, historical accuracy, better listening techniques, and the importance of sharing our stories!
In June 2021, the ARPR Commission and the Regional Minister were able to offer an online Racial Equity Training through the support and hard work of our Training Team. This online model consisted of a series of (1) self-paced lessons through an e-learning platform, (2) online discussion forums, and (3) scheduled zoom sessions. This training was effective and successful. Additionally, we discovered ways to improve and streamline the online experience.
While the process and content of the training are the same as our in-person, two-day workshop, the format, delivery, and length are different. Participants begin with an orientation session via Zoom, then complete self-paced lessons over the course of 3 weeks and conclude the course with several scheduled Zoom sessions. Our goal is to refrain from two concurrent days of eight-hour long zoom meetings while including as much interaction as possible through the best practices of online continuing education.
We have set the next online workshop dates as follows:
Oct 18 (Mon) – Opening Zoom Session (6-8:30pm)
Oct 19 (Tues) – Online Lessons Open for Participants to complete
Nov 1 (Mon) – Zoom Day 1 (9am-12noon & 2pm-5pm)
Nov 6 (Sat) – Zoom Day 2 (10am-12noon & 2pm-5pm)
Nov 9 (Tues) – Online Course Closes
We encourage all clergy who have not yet completed the required Racial Equity Training to register for the online training as soon as possible as participation is limited to forty (40) participants.
Grace & Peace to you,
Bishop Valerie Melvin, Regional Minister, NC
Rev. Dr. Jackie McHenry, Chair, ARPR Commission
Rev. Jason Williams, Vice-Chair, ARPR Commission…

Revive! Renewal Experience This Summer for Eastern N.C. Pastors Hosted by Barton College
Barton College is pleased to announce the Revive! Renewal Experience for pastors in Eastern North Carolina this summer. This experience will be the first featured event to be offered by the newly formed Center for Vocation and Rural Ministry at Barton College, made possible through the generosity of the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
The Revive! Renewal Experience is meant to serve as a sabbatical experience for pastors of small congregations, rural congregations, and congregations of color in Eastern North Carolina. The experience will begin on July 24, and run through August 1. There are 12 positions available during this first cohort.
“Barton College and its Center for Vocation and Rural Ministry looks forward to welcoming pastors to campus this summer,” shares Dr. Rodney A. Werline, director of the Center for Religious Studies and the Leman and Marie Barnhill Endowed Chair in Religious Studies. “This time away from the parish will provide pastors an opportunity to experience a renewal of spirit and energy, a chance to fully engage in discussions and study without distraction, and a time for vocational discernment.”
Participants will have the opportunity to have their pulpits filled by trained Barton College students, faculty, and staff. The participating pastors will be housed at Barton College and will experience times of relaxation, enjoy opportunities to meet colleagues and develop collegial relationships, engage with the local culture, explore ideas with scholars, and receive support through spiritual direction, as well as nurture for all aspects of a pastor’s wellbeing.
In the months that follow, spiritual direction and opportunities to engage in other supportive activities will be offered. Participants will be invited to return for a second sabbatical in the summer of 2022, even as a new cohort is formed during that summer.
There is no cost to participants.
Applications are due no later than June 15, and the application form can be accessed by clicking on this link: Barton College Revive! Renewal Experience. We look forward to receiving and reviewing your application, and we hope that you will spread the word to other colleagues. Pastors of all ecumenical denominations are welcomed to apply.
For additional information about Revive! Renewal Experience or for information regarding the Center for Vocation and Rural Ministry at Barton College, please contact the Reverend Blythe Taylor, assistant provost for integrative learning, director of the Oral Communication Center, at [email protected] or 252-399-6541.…
